Square Dancing's
"Rip Van Winkle "

Having called for 18 years from 1971 to 1989, I found myself walking away from calling for 36 years. When I returned April of 2025, I was amazed at how much Square Dancing had changed. You might call me the "Rip Van Winkle" of Square Dancing.
So, why did I leave Square Dancing, which I loved so much? I was calling 5 nights a week when my first child was born. Eventually, I left calling to raise 3 sons. After 36 years Square Dancing itself sought me out again. It was dancers who sought me asking me to return to calling and I'm glad they did!
Having called during the "Golden Age of Square Dancing" I know how great this activity can be. In those days we experienced local festivals with large turnouts and National Square Dance Conventions with 30,000 dancers in attendance. When I returned to calling I was surprised to see how much Square Dance attendance had fallen off. When I look at a floor of dancers, or even just one square, I still see the excitement and glory of those bygone days. I would consider it an honor if you allow me to help bring the excitement of those times back into your Square Dance Program or Event.
Psychology Of The Dance
To deliver a good dance you must first understand what the dancers want and know how to deliver it. This means not just calling the advertised levels, but reading what level of difficulty the dancers desire, what energy level the dancers want, and being able to deliver those aspects while giving them the variety they desire. It also means staying on top of this the entire night as you take the dancers on an emotional roller coaster of both exciting and relaxing dancing. All this needs to be done at the proper time through out the entire night. This is my goal every time I walk into a Square Dance hall, to deliver the best full night of dancing I can, regardless of the level.

Professionalism
A Square Dance Caller should be a professional in all aspects of calling. This includes the quality of the sound you provide, the variety of music you use, the choreography you choose, how you entertain the dancers, and the way you conduct yourself. I strive to be a professional in every aspect of calling.
Trained By The Best
Studying the styles and techniques of the best callers in the business I learned how to motivate dancers and control dance floors. Being mentored by Dick Jones of Califon, NJ, one of the best callers ever to pick up a mic, I learned how to craft a comprehensive dance program and entertain the dancers at the same time.

Travel Range
Having been asked "How far will I travel to call?" I have come up with the following answer.
Currently I am only calling in and around the Mississippi area. Quite frankly, the reason for this is, I am still regaining my calling "chops" after a 36 year lay off. Every week my skills are returning and growing. After I have regained sufficient skills I plan to expand my traveling range. Currently the goal is to expand the range in which I am willing to travel in January of 2026. At that time my traveling range will be expanded to an area approximately 8-9 hours from central Mississippi. At that time I will be available to call in all of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Plus, I will be available in central Texas, eastern Missouri, western Kentucky, most of Tennessee, northern Florida, and eastern Oklahoma. Farther distances can be discussed if requested.

I think I have made a break through in regaining my skills as a caller. No, I am not instantaneously the caller I was 36 years ago. I will never be that caller again. I do not have the same concentration levels that I once had. I am not going to state here how many squares I could remember and site on back in the day. Other callers didn't believe me back in the day until I would demonstrate it to them. Choreography will probably never just flow from my 71 year old brain the way it did from my 35 year old brain which had 18 years of practice.
However, in creating this website I looked deeply into my past and realized I was so busy learning the mechanics of calling again, I had forgotten about the art of calling. What I am about to say troubles me in just saying it. The reason for that is I was known for being extremely arrogant when I was younger. I don't want to be that person again and this may sound arrogant. Really it is not arrogance it is simply an inconvenient truth. In the past I could call to a floor where another caller had problems and I would not. The dancers could dance to me if I called the same thing another caller couldn't get them to dance to. It is the ART of calling. I could excite a floor where another caller couldn't. It is the ART of calling. At a dance with 10 squares in attendance a fellow caller could get 8 up to dance, but when I would call all 10 would get up to dance. It is the ART of calling.
Back 36 years ago I understood the ART of calling. It is such a complicated process and so many nuances to it many callers never get it. They may be good callers but they never understand the ART of calling. Today I must say my return to calling has been void of the ART. In building this website I have been reminded of that. Self evaluation has made me understand I still have that info locked in my brain. I just have to find a way to pull it out while I am calling and put it into practice again. Now that I am aware of it maybe my skills will start coming back quicker. I just need mic time! Anyone want me to call for them? I'm ready to go!
Testimonials
I invited Tim Hendricks to call for the Laurelaires, having never met him or seen him call. The night he came, we had a new couple show up for beginner lessons. We were very impressed with his ability to teach and to get them dancing right away, and we were extremely pleased with his calling for both mainstream and plus tips. In fact he exceeded our expectations as a caller. He is both professional and personable, and the club agreed to invite him to become one of our rotational callers.

Tim, you are truly amazing! You were totally away from Square Dancing and Calling for almost 40 years and with some persuasion you have re-entered dancing and calling with so much energy and enthusiasm. It's like you picked up exactly where you left off! You were outstanding back in the day!! The Yellow Rocker Square Dance Club is so blessed to have your participation in dancing and calling for us. You are an awesome Square Dance Caller! Keep up the good work and welcome back to the square dance family. Looking forward to the next dance you call.
