I started dancing at 15 years old and started calling two years later. At the age of 19 I attended Dick Jones' Caller School at Rainbow Lake Lodge in North Carolina. At this school I developed a friendship with Dick Jones who would go on to mentor me until he passed away.
At the age of 17 the Central Mississippi Callers Association voted to allow me to join their association. Two years later I was one of the callers to push the C.M.C.A. to grow to a state wide association and change it's name to Mississippi Square Dance Callers Association. Four years later I led the movement to expand the state callers association to branch into 3 districts. At the age of 24 I was elected president of the Central District of the Mississippi Square Dance Callers Association and a year later 30 callers voted for me to become the president of the state association.
As my calling skills increased I established multiple successful Square Dance clubs, one of which is still dancing fifty years later. I was always grateful for the help I received from Dick Jones and decided to give back by paying it forward. Putting together a comprehensive book with instructions to help new callers get started calling I put on a callers school for in state dancers who wanted to learn to call. This school had a 40 hour curriculum including multiple opportunities for mic time in front of dancers. Out of this callers school four callers emerged who established themselves as club callers and a couple more who would help teach lessons.
As my skills as a caller increased so did my booking opportunities. Eventually, I was booked 5 nights a week. It was during this time my first son was born. At his first birthday party I realized I had missed the entire first year of his life. It was at this point I decided to cut back on my calling engagements. I made arrangements to reduce my schedule to three nights a week. Two years later son number two came along and I cut back again. After my third son was born I made the decision to stop calling and dedicate that energy into being the best dad I could be.
Thirty-six years later, in April of 2025 I got a call from a dancer. This conversation revealed, not only a club I started 50 years ago was still meeting, but some of the dancers I taught were still dancing and one of the callers who attended my callers school was now that club's caller. I agreed to attend one of the club's meetings so I could see these people again. While there, the trap was sprung to get me to try calling again. After much encouragement to do so, I picked up the mic and very clumsily called a tip of patter feeling like Rip Van Winkle the whole time. That was all it took. I was in love with Square Dancing and Calling all over again.
I am currently concentrating on regaining my calling skills and am only booking for clubs in state as they need and desire me to call. In January 2026 I will be available to call farther out and am planning on traveling up to 8-9 hours from central Mississippi for calling dates. This is providing I am comfortable with my returning skill level and am fully confident I can, once again, deliver the dance required for, and expected from, by such a commitment.
"It's like you picked up exactly where you left off! You were outstanding back in the day!! ... You are an awesome Square Dance Caller!"
